Admissions Requirements

The Ph.D. program is a mentor-based research doctorate. Potential applicants will not be admitted without a mentor.

If you are considering applying, you must decide on a particular area of research, identify a faculty member who works in that area of study as a potential mentor, and contact him or her to begin discussions and planning.

We recommend you start this process five to six months ahead of the application deadline. Our program is competitive because its capacity is limited to how many Ph.D. students our faculty can mentor.

In addition, all potential Ph.D. applicants must meet the Graduate School’s admission requirements.

Our program also requires that you pass the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) if your native language is not English, or your undergraduate instruction was not in English.
