Interests
Michelle has worked with individuals who are deaf/hard of hearing throughout her career. She enjoys collaborating with medical and educational teams serving children with cochlear implants, to optimize spoken language in everyday settings. Her focus has shifted from helping determine a child’s preferred input/output mode of communication to helping children think with spoken language in the home, daycare or preschool environments. Her recent focus includes inservice and consultation for educators who serve students with cochlear implants. Michelle also offers a clinic focused on helping adults who are hard of hearing increase their communication independence and effectiveness in the workplace, often as an outgrowth of their interest in cochlear implant candidacy and prognosis.
A second area of recent focus has been provision of a language preschool program for hearing children who are mildly or moderately delayed in their language development and may not qualify for services through other agencies. Oftentimes, these children serve as peer models for a similar aged child who utilizes amplification. Finally, diagnostic clinics are offered to determine communication needs and/or pre-candidacy baseline and prognosis for cochlear implants across the age range In addition, in recent years, Michelle has been an invited speaker in personnel development offered through the Department of Public Instruction through the WESP-DHH office.
