Michael Chial earned a bachelor's degree from Mankato State College (now Minnesota State University) in 1965, MA and MS degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1968, and a Ph.D. in communicative disorders from UW-Madison in 1973. His teaching and research are in hearing science, laboratory instrumentation, technical calibration and standards, digital speech synthesis, occupational hearing conservation, forensic audiology, and quantitative assessments of clinical decision-making. Consulting clients include IBM, Apple Computer, the Michigan Department of State Police, the Attorney General of Michigan, Ford Motor Company, General Motors Corporation, the U.S. Army, state departments of public health, and municipalities, federal agencies, private attorneys, professional associations,, universities, and corporations. Chial has abiding interests in computer applications in communication sciences and disorders, and in instructional development.
