Undergraduate Advising

We believe undergraduate academic advising is most effective face-to-face.  Prospective majors are strongly encouraged to call the department (608.262.3951) to make an advising appointment.

There are two paths to a major in Communicative Disorders, one through the College of Letters and Science (L&S), and another through the School of Education (SoE). There are significant differences between degree requirements associated with these two paths.  An on-line description of major requirements for the first path can be found at http://www.wisc.edu/pubs/ug/10lettsci/depts/commdis.html ,and for the second path at  http://www.wisc.edu/pubs/ug/06education/curric/comdis.html. Both descriptions are frequently revised, and thus may not incorporate up-to-the-minute changes relating to courses, instructors, frequency of course offerings, and major requirements.

Students begin the core sequence of required courses within the department only after they achieve sophomore standing (defined as a minimum of 24 total credits).  Before this landmark event, students are advised to begin work on some or all out-of-department course requirements for the major.  These include designated courses in related areas, spanning basic psychology (e.g., Psych 202 for L&S, or Ed Psych 301 for SoE); basic statistics (e.g., Psych 210 or Stat 301); basic linguistics (e.g., Ling 101 or Ling 301); ethnic studies (e.g., Soc 134 or Soc 220); and, physical or biological science (e.g., Physics 103 or Zoology 101).

A 3.0 grade point average across the required introductory course triad (i.e., CD201, CD202, and CD240) is necessary for admission to the major. These are the first three courses taken in the department, unless students choose to enroll in the elective survey course, CD110 Introduction to Communicative Disorders, which can be taken while a freshman.

Additional information related to degree requirements for Letters and Science can be obtained from the Letters and Science Advising Center, 25 Ingraham Hall (608.262.1849).  Comparable information relating to Liberal Studies Requirements in the School of Education can be obtained from Education Academic Services, B117 Education Building (608.262.1651).
